Mac OS X Lion - Stable as the FTSE100!

Posted Aug 22, 2011 | ~2 minute read

Following on from my original post about OS X Lion, i'm still having an insane number of problems with my main work machine. So much so, i'm giving myself three options :

  • Try and work through the problems (hoping that Apple fix them!)
  • Revert back to Snow Leopard
  • Wipe the machine and run Linux.

My main gripe with the OS is it's stability. I'll explain below :

Stability

Quite simply, it's not stable for me. Whether this is a common issue, or just my barely-year-old iMac, it's incredibly frustrating.

I use my iMac as my main work machine and it's been faultless. Since upgrading to Lion, it often decides to kernal panic when it's awaken from sleep mode. For those that don't know, the kernal panic on a mac is when you get this overlay slide down from the top of the screen, with a message saying you need to restart your Mac.

It's infuriating.

I save my work often, because I know this happens, but seems Apple are pushing the "auto-save" feature, i can see a lot of people losing their work if they're not careful!

You may wonder why it grates so much? Well, Lion was meant to be an evolutionary step on from Snow Leopard and was used as the base to Lion. Snow Leopard never did this for me, and was incredibly reliable often allowing me to work for over 40 days between shut-downs. Why the backwards step? What have they introduced that is just not stable on my Mac?

Now i'm half tempted to call Apple and make them aware of how much time i'm losing as a result of their recent release. If this continues, they can take my iMac back. I would be over the moon for them to take the iMac back and use it for testing so they can identify the bugs, as long as they provide me with another one to work from.

So, anyone know anyone at Apple?
